An ISIS attack in Hawija was repelled by Iraqi forces on Saturday. Gunmen opened fire early in the day on a Federal Police post in Burghliya village, in the Danadish area of Hawija district, Kirkuk province, before fleeing, an Iraqi military intelligence source told 964media.
Pursuit and siege
Federal Police and Iraqi army units chased the attackers and killed one suspected ISIS militant, the source said. Three others were surrounded in a cornfield, where clashes were still under way at the time of reporting.

Second ISIS attack in Hawija this week
It was the second attack on the same post this week. On Oct. 5, suspected ISIS militants killed a Federal Police officer, wounded four others and damaged a thermal surveillance camera there. On Oct. 6, police imposed a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew on five Danadish villages, including Burghliya. The same day, gunfire targeted thermal equipment of the Popular Mobilization Forces’ 61st Brigade.
964media noted that on Aug. 10 the Security Media Cell said Iraqi aircraft had destroyed eight suspected militant hideouts in Kirkuk. ISIS lost territorial control in Iraq in 2017, but remnants remain active in rural and remote areas.
