Albanese: Bombs on Gaza Equal Six Nuclear Bombs

UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese has said the explosive power of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza over the past three years equals six nuclear bombs. According to Days of Palestine, Albanese told Al Jazeera in an interview from Tunis on Friday that Israeli forces “continue to bomb Gaza, turning the rubble into dust, while civilians have nowhere to shelter.”

Albanese Warns of a “Slow Death”

Citing Gaza Government Media Office figures, Albanese said about 223,000 tonnes of explosives had been dropped on Gaza since October 2023, killing more than 74,000 Palestinians and injuring 157,000. “The situation is getting worse day after day, and language is no longer sufficient to describe what is happening with precision,” she said. She warned that Gaza’s roughly 2.3 million residents face disease, severe malnutrition and collapsed services causing “intense suffering and a slow death,” with about 1.8 million people crammed into less than 30% of the territory.

US Pressure and The Hague Group

Albanese accused Washington of pressuring states pursuing accountability, saying countries including Senegal and Colombia had withdrawn from The Hague Group. “It is hard to stand up to the United States, especially when dealing with an administration that acts in a retaliatory manner,” she said. She added that Gaza’s health system had “collapsed long ago” and that aid was not entering in sufficient quantities.
