Indonesia Mandatory Halal Certification Starts Oct. 18

Indonesia mandatory halal certification will begin on schedule in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country. The Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) said the policy will take effect on Oct. 18 with no plans for postponement, Indonesia’s state news agency ANTARA reported on Saturday.

Indonesia mandatory halal certification: “no delays”

“The mandatory halal policy will take effect on October 18 as planned. There will be no delays,” BPJPH head Ahmad Haikal Hassan said. He added that the government is drafting provisions offering tailored treatment for certain product categories, particularly goods from micro and small enterprises and specific imports, to ensure orderly and proportionate implementation while safeguarding business continuity.

Consumer protection, not an import barrier

Haikal stressed that mandatory certification is not an import restriction and does not impose undue burdens, but reflects government efforts to strengthen consumer protection and business certainty. The policy is based on Law No. 33/2014 on Halal Product Assurance.

He said enforcement will be proportionate, backed by expanded guidance, assistance and oversight, and that the government has no intention of raiding businesses after the policy takes effect. Haikal also warned the public against people falsely claiming to be BPJPH officials and demanding payments, urging them to rely only on the agency’s official portal.
