Qatar at the UN: Make Middle East Free of Nuclear Weapons

Qatar at the UN has called for international law to be applied consistently, without selectivity or double standards, and for stepped-up efforts to make the Middle East a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. Qatari diplomats set out the positions before the First and Sixth Committees of the UN General Assembly’s 81st session.

A Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction

According to The Peninsula, Talal Abdulaziz Al Naama, first secretary at Qatar’s Permanent Mission to the UN, told the First Committee’s general debate that Qatar gives significant priority to the UN conference on establishing a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other WMDs. He voiced support for Oman’s presidency of the conference’s seventh session, which ends in November 2026, and said Qatar looks forward to presiding over the eighth session. He expressed regret that the eleventh NPT Review Conference, held from April 27 to May 22, 2026, ended without consensus on a substantive outcome document, and reaffirmed the inalienable right of NPT states parties to peaceful nuclear energy.

Qatar at the UN: no double standards

Gulf Times, citing the Qatar News Agency, reported that Second Secretary Abdulaziz al-Sulaiti told the Sixth Committee that the credibility of the international legal system depends on how its rules are enforced, and that respect for the rule of law is a firm commitment embedded in the UN Charter. Al Naama added that Qatar’s priority is to contain escalation and open the way for diplomacy, and that Doha will keep working with partners to build common ground among the parties.
