Worshippers returning from mosque were attacked in Nigeria’s central Plateau State, leaving one young man dead and another wounded. Suspected Berom militia targeted Fulani youths heading home after Maghrib prayers, NewsNG reported on Saturday.
Gunfire after Maghrib prayers
Security sources said the attack happened at about 5:42 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, on the Dorowa–Rafamol road in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. Troops responding to a distress call from the Rafamol community found that two people had been shot.
Abdullahi Yakubu, 28, was killed at the scene, while Abdullahi Aminu was shot in the leg and taken to Barkin Ladi General Hospital. Three empty 7.62mm cartridge cases were recovered. Troops have stepped up operations around Dorowa Babuje and Rafamol to track down the attackers and prevent reprisals or further escalation.
Worshippers returning from mosque: not the first attack
Attacks on worshippers are not new in Nigeria. Sahara Reporters reported that gunmen abducted worshippers during Friday prayers in Dekara District, Niger State, on Aug. 21. A document it obtained listed 547 captives, including men, women and children, taken into the Kainji Lake National Park forest, whose whereabouts remained unknown as of Sept. 24.
