Bosnia’s New Grand Mufti: Nedzad Grabus Elected

One of Europe’s oldest Muslim communities has new leadership. Sarajevo mufti Nedzad Grabus was elected Bosnia’s new Grand Mufti (Reis-ul-ulema) on Saturday, winning 230 votes at a session of the Electoral Body held at the Gazi Husrev-beg Library in Sarajevo, TRT Balkan reported.

“Today the Islamic Community won, today the Muslims in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sandzak, Croatia, Slovenia and the entire diaspora won,” Grabus said, adding that they had shown they could pass responsibly through a demanding election. He pledged that the Islamic Community would always stand for all that is good and fight against everything that is harmful to Muslims or to society as a whole.

Grabus thanked outgoing Reis-ul-ulema Husein Kavazovic, who led the community for two terms. He noted that the first peaceful transfer of leadership took place in 2012, when Kavazovic was elected, and that the process was being repeated in 2026. Kavazovic congratulated all Muslims and said the new era would demand new steps.

Oath on Nov. 15

According to Edhem Bicakcic, president of the community’s Sabor (assembly), Grabus will receive his mensura, the document confirming his election, at a ceremony at the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque in Sarajevo on Nov. 15, where he will take the oath. Grabus served as mufti of Ljubljana and head of the Islamic Community in Slovenia from 2006 to 2021, and has been mufti of Sarajevo since Sept. 15, 2021.
