KP Governor’s Rule an Attack on Mandate: Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jafri

Senate Opposition Leader Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jafri, chief of Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM), has described Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor’s rule and the emergency imposed in the province as an attack on the public mandate. In a statement on Sunday, he strongly condemned the forcible removal of the elected provincial government, the arrest of the chief minister elected with a two-thirds majority, and the imposition of governor’s rule and emergency, calling it a serious attack on the public mandate, constitutional supremacy and democratic values.

According to Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper, the president approved the emergency and governor’s rule in the province on Sunday under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, on the federal cabinet’s recommendation.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor’s rule draws sharp response

“The public mandate is not a piece of paper,” Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jafri said. “Power can be gained by force, but not public trust.”

He said lasting peace cannot be built without public support. Peace, he said, comes not from the indiscriminate use of force but from public trust, political stability, justice and an effective strategy.

Warning of political instability

The Senate opposition leader warned that pushing people already burdened by poverty, inflation and unemployment further against the wall, insulting their vote and closing constitutional and democratic paths could plunge the entire political system into instability.

The country, he said, is not the fiefdom of any individual or family. “Pakistan’s stability lies in democracy and the supremacy of the Constitution,” he added.
