Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, said on Thursday that the United States had faced a “shameful defeat,” dismissing warnings from Donald Trump about a prolonged naval blockade that could severely impact Iran’s economy.
In a message broadcast on state television, Khamenei stated that two months after what he described as the largest military aggression by global powers in the region, the US had failed in its objectives. He added that a “new chapter” was beginning for the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
The message was released on Iran’s annual “Persian Gulf Day.” Khamenei has not appeared publicly since March 9, when he assumed leadership following the death of his predecessor and father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed during large-scale strikes by the US and Israel on February 28.
Khamenei also criticized US military presence in the region, saying American bases lack the ability to protect themselves, let alone ensure the safety of their allies. He emphasized Iran’s new legal and administrative control over the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as a step toward regional stability and development.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy route, has become a major flashpoint during the ongoing Middle East conflict. Iran has restricted traffic through the waterway, allowing only limited ship movement.
In his remarks, Khamenei predicted a future for the Gulf region without US involvement and condemned foreign interference. He stated that external powers operating from afar have no rightful place in the region.
He also praised the Iranian people, highlighting the country’s capabilities in science, industry, and advanced technologies, including nuclear and missile development, as key national assets.
Earlier the same day, Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, said that any US naval blockade in response to Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz would ultimately fail. He warned that such measures would increase tensions and undermine long-term stability in the Persian Gulf.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Navy Commander, Shahram Irani, indicated that newly developed naval weapons could be deployed in the near future, signaling continued military readiness.
