Albanians protest against Trump-linked luxury resort in protected area

Hundreds of people, including locals and activists, gathered on Saturday at the Vjosa-Narta lagoon on the southern Adriatic coast to protest against a €1.4 billion luxury beach resort project.

The project is being led by an investment firm owned by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, in the environmentally sensitive protected area.

Demonstrators waved Albanian flags, carried inflatable flamingos, and chanted slogans such as “cancel the project!”

Protesters warned that the development would cause irreversible damage to the region’s biodiversity. The project includes hotels on the uninhabited island of Sazan and in the Vjosa-Narta wetland, home to migratory birds.

Similar protests have also taken place in the capital Tirana. Prime Minister Edi Rama has downplayed the demonstrations.
