Nepal Floods: 469 Dead as Glacier Collapse Triggers Massive Devastation

Nepali authorities have confirmed receiving an emergency warning from Chinese officials regarding a newly formed glacial lake, created by the recent floods, which is at imminent risk of bursting. In light of this severe alert, Nepal Police have issued strict directives for security personnel involved in rescue operations and local residents to remain on high alert and immediately evacuate to safer locations.

According to a report by the Kathmandu Post, the death toll from this horrific natural disaster has soared to 469, while over 1,300 individuals remain missing, including several foreign nationals. The massive floodwaters have wreaked havoc on the country’s infrastructure, collapsing dozens of bridges and destroying major roads, forcing Nepali authorities to rely heavily on helicopters to conduct ongoing rescue operations.

The devastating impacts of this flooding have also spilled over into China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. According to Chinese authorities, at least 3 people have lost their lives, and 558 individuals are reported missing in the region.

Experts from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) have revealed that the root cause of this catastrophe was the breaking off of a massive section of a glacier. According to these experts, the glacier’s collapse triggered a 5.2 magnitude earthquake, which mobilized a massive avalanche, ultimately generating the catastrophic flood that has claimed hundreds of human lives.
