ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has suspended the licence of Geo News for 15 days with immediate effect over the broadcast of religious visualisation during a special Muharram transmission.
According to an order issued by PEMRA’s Authority Committee, the regulator took notice of a programme titled Safar-e-Ishq, aired by Geo News on June 26, 2026, during its special transmission for Muharram 10.
PEMRA said the programme contained religious visualisation which, given the religious, cultural and social sensitivities surrounding the subject, constituted a serious regulatory concern.

The authority stated that the broadcast was liable to hurt the religious sentiments of viewers, undermine religious harmony, and create a risk of disturbing public peace. The order said the licensee failed to exercise heightened editorial judgment while airing religious content.
PEMRA exercised powers under Section 30 of the PEMRA Ordinance and ordered the suspension of Geo News’ licence for 15 days. The channel’s transmission remains suspended on satellite and all distribution networks during this period.
The regulator also referred the matter to the Council of Complaints for further examination and possible additional action. Geo News has been directed to conduct an internal inquiry into the lapse and submit its findings. The order was issued without prejudice to further proceedings.
