Palestinian prisoner Imad Sarhan dies in Israeli Gilboa prison due to medical neglect

RAMALLAH: Israeli authorities on Sunday informed the family of Palestinian prisoner Imad Rajeh Sarhan, 47, from Haifa in the 1948 occupied territories, that he died in Gilboa prison after suffering a heart attack on Saturday.

Sarhan had been detained since October 15, 2001, and was serving a life sentence. He suffered prolonged interrogation and systematic torture in the early years of his imprisonment, leading to serious and lasting health complications.

In recent years, Sarhan suffered from chronic heart and vascular diseases and high blood pressure. He was forced to use a wheelchair due to severe health decline but was still kept in harsh prison conditions.

His death brings the number of Palestinian prisoners who have died in Israeli prisons since October 7, 2023 to 90, while the total number of prisoner deaths since 1967 has reached 327. Palestinian institutions hold Israeli authorities fully responsible for his death due to deliberate medical neglect and systematic abuse.
