A statement from Israel’s foreign ministry described the essay by Nicholas Kristof as one of the most hideous and distorted lies ever published against the State of Israel. Netanyahu and Sa’ar have instructed the initiation of a defamation lawsuit against the newspaper.

The New York Times strongly defended its reporting saying any legal claim would be without merit. The newspaper stated that Kristof’s interviews were thoroughly fact-checked and corroborated with witnesses family members lawyers human rights groups and UN testimony.

Accounts of systematic sexual abuse and torture in Israeli detention have also been documented by multiple Israeli and international human rights organizations. This is not the first time Israel has threatened media outlets with lawsuits over critical reporting.
